The Merchant of Venice

by William Shakespeare

Actors’ Shakespeare Project

Director: Igor Golyak

Set & Costume Design: Nastya Bugaeva

Lighting Design: Jeff Adelberg

Sound Designer: Dewey Dellay

Props Designer/Production Manager: Steve Vieira

Puppet Designer: Ksenya Litvak

Technical Director: Ben Lieberson

This production addressed the antisemitism in the text head on. Nastya Bugaeva's design included a 10'x10' platform, with built in marquee lighting, which needed to support dancing by a cast of 8. The entire platform was to disappear from the stage at intermission and return during the final moments of the show with an 8' plexiglass cube, containing one of the actors. We were able to achieve the effect with a set of pneumatic caster lifts that I designed, plus a pair of lever hoists to lower the cube onto the platform. The final unit with the actor and cube weighed approximately a half ton and was movable by a single crew member.

Rhinoceros

by Eugène Ionesco

Wellesley College Theatre

Director: Marta Rainer

Set Design: Drew Chasse

Costume Design: Chelsea Kerl

Lighting Design: Bridget Doyle

Sound Design: George Cooke

Mask & Puppet Fabrication: Ben Lieberson

Based on sketches from costume designer Chelsea Kerl, I created 7 wire-frame masks and a matching rhinoceros puppet. I hand-shaped pieces of steel rod, welded them together, finished them with a high-gloss enamel, and mounted them onto helmets with ratcheting headbands. The result was easy for the actors to work with and durable enough to withstand an extremely physical production.
